Dingle Peninsula
Blasket Islands
The Blasket Islands form a small archipelago comprising six main islands and numerous smaller ones, situated approximately 5km off the Dingle Peninsula. These islands hold the distinction of being Ireland and Europe’s westernmost point. Although they are no longer inhabited, having been deserted in 1953 due to the challenges of rowing traditional canoes (naomhoga) to the mainland amid years of hardship and emigration, they remain rich in diverse wildlife. Among their inhabitants are puffins, seabirds, whales, dolphins, and notably, one of Ireland’s largest seal colonies, making them a haven for nature enthusiasts.
